Android 17: Upcoming confirmed and leaked features

To try it out, open the Terminal app and tap the Display button in the top-right corner to launch a session that supports graphical output. This Time zone change notification went live in the July 2025 Android Canary release and was graduated to the stable release with Android 16 QPR2 stable release. The notification’s title will say “Your time zone changed,” and the body will include the exact time zone you’re now in. The description states that the feature will allow you to “receive a notification when your time zone is automatically updated.” Your Android phone can automatically adjust the time when you enter a new time zone. A new toggle in Android 16 QPR2 allows you to disable Failed Authentication Lock.
This new profile is intended for companion apps to medical devices, granting permissions for posting notifications, managing Bluetooth connections, and sending alerts at precise times. Tapping the “recording saved” notification opens a new screen with a simple video player that includes a seekbar, a play/pause button, and a mute button. The expanded bubble bar shows only the five most recently opened bubbles, kudosbet though the bubble overflow menu lists other previously opened bubbles. Once activated, the launcher adds a “bubble” button to the context menu that appears when you press and hold on any app on the home screen. More importantly, the “Microphone, Camera & Location” dialog now correctly lists the specific apps accessing your location. Android 16 QPR2 introduces a built-in Parental Controls menu that provides a centralized location for managing device-specific restrictions.

The most visible change to the screen recorder is the replacement of the pop-up dialog with a new toolbar. Code for the mentioned changes is present since Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3, while Android 17 Beta 3 confirmed most of these changes (but not all). With Android 17 Beta 2, Google is expanding its SMS OTP protection by automatically delaying access to SMS messages with OTP for apps that aren’t the intended recipient or the default SMS handler app.

This is possible because the HDR display mode enhances supported images and videos by boosting brightness, expanding the color range, and improving clarity. When enabled, adjusting the slider dynamically adjusts the brightness of specific elements in an HDR image, such as the sky or water. It’s worth noting that these screen saver features are only new to older models, as they have been available on the Pixel 10 series since launch, complementing the lineup’s Pixelsnap wireless charging accessories. This meant that if you wanted to use the Home Controls screen saver during the day but switch to the Clock at night, you had to toggle between them manually. In Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2, users noticed that swiping away apps in the Recents menu is now faster than ever.

Desktop Mode and related changes

It is a new operating system developed by Google, designed for virtual reality and augmented reality devices, such as VR headsets and smart glasses. Under such sanctions Huawei has long-term plans to replace Android in 2022 with the new operating system, as Harmony OS was originally designed for internet of things devices, rather than for smartphones and tablets. Google introduced the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones in October 2016, marketed as being the first phones made by Google, and exclusively featured certain software features, such as the Google Assistant, before wider rollout.

  • To help you find memory leaks, Android Studio Panda adds LeakCanary integration directly in the Android Studio Profiler as a dedicated task, contextualized within the IDE and fully integrated with your source code.
  • This new profile is intended for companion apps to medical devices, granting permissions for posting notifications, managing Bluetooth connections, and sending alerts at precise times.
  • Live Updates is one of the highlight features of Android 16, but it was absent from the first stable Android 16 release.
  • This new spec adds features like hybrid UWB scheduling, which allows multiple UWB applications and features to run concurrently.
  • Shortly thereafter, Qualcomm followed suit, offering extending support timelines for OEM building phones with its chipsets, first to seven years in 2024, followed by eight years in 2025.

This feature is designed to offer seamless task continuity, enabling users to pick up exactly where they left off in their workflow across their Android ecosystem. Android 16 QPR1 included code for a new system-level feature called “Task Continuity,” and, as you’d expect, it’s designed to let you seamlessly transfer an app’s current state from one Android device to another. Back in July 2025, we spotted Google working on a Handoff feature that would allow users to sync notifications, share files, and continue apps across their Android devices. Users can tap the indicator to see exactly which apps have recently accessed their location and manage those permissions immediately through a “Recent app use” dialog. Once consent is provided, this session-based access eliminates the need for repeated prompts for location-dependent features. With Android 17 Beta 3, Google is introducing a new location button that apps can use to request the user’s precise location for one session (i.e., until you close the app).

In some cases it may not be possible to deny certain permissions to pre-installed apps, nor be possible to disable them. An opt-in system is used instead, in which users are prompted to grant or deny individual permissions to an app when they are needed for the first time. After reviewing these permissions, the user could choose to accept or refuse them, installing the application only if they accepted. In former Android versions, before installing an application, the Google Play store displayed a list of the requirements an app needs to function. Originally only doing so during installation, Verify Apps received an update in 2014 to “constantly” scan apps, and in 2017 the feature was made visible to users through a menu in Settings. Android applications run in a sandbox, an isolated area of the system that does not have access to the rest of the system’s resources, unless access permissions are explicitly granted by the user when the application is installed, however this may not be possible for pre-installed apps.

  • Later QPR betas give us even more features that can be chalked up to the next platform release, unless they are completely Pixel-exclusive.
  • Before Android 12, the OS had separate Quick Settings toggles for Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Moreover, modified firmware such as CyanogenMod sometimes offer features, such as tethering, for which carriers would otherwise charge a premium.
  • More importantly, the “Microphone, Camera & Location” dialog now correctly lists the specific apps accessing your location.
  • Because of this limitation, apps that need this functionality end up baking in a separate mechanism (usually a button or similar entry point outside the Photo picker) to click a new photo.
  • Android smartphones have the ability to report the location of Wi-Fi access points, encountered as phone users move around, to build databases containing the physical locations of hundreds of millions of such access points.

Shortly thereafter, Qualcomm followed suit, offering extending support timelines for OEM building phones with its chipsets, first to seven years in 2024, followed by eight years in 2025. Fairphone, a company focused on sustainability, explained that its inability to extend software support was due to Qualcomm’s policies rather than its own. To address this concern, Google introduced Project Treble, a framework designed to streamline the development and deployment of Android updates via Google Play Services, reducing manufacturers’ involvement in the update process.

{A hacker could easily use the “Android system permissions” to fetch the account credentials in order to do so. Users can also be tricked into granting additional permissions to the malicious apps, which later enable them to perform various nefarious activities, including intercepting texts or calls and stealing banking credentials. Android smartphones have the ability to report the location of Wi-Fi access points, encountered as phone users move around, to build databases containing the physical locations of hundreds of millions of such access points. For example, Samsung has worked with General Dynamics through their Open Kernel Labs acquisition to rebuild Jelly Bean on top of their hardened microvisor for the “Knox” project.}
